So Fargo, so good: the Resilient City
Fargo on the eastern border of North Dakota was renamed in honor founder of Wells Fargo Express Company colorful, William Fargo, after it was originally known as Centralia. The city is located west River Rouge, the state of Minnesota to the east, and only 275 miles from the greater metropolitan area of Minneapolis-St.Paul.
The largest city North Dakota, Fargo is conveniently located next to the rich agricultural belt of the Central Plains and is nicknamed the Gateway to the West because of its location at the crossroads of major railroads and the Red River. As the city grew in the 1870s and 1880s, he was helped by being a stop Early space for steamboats. The commercial mixture arriving by river and railway has helped reinforce the importance of the city of the region.
The first failure occurred when the city of Fargo has been almost completely destroyed in June 1893 after a small fire ash behind a grocery store spread quickly and engulfed hundreds of buildings near the wooden structure. But this disaster better suspended, limited version what happened before the brick buildings and a new water system has enabled the city to develop in a way that the former format could not be permitted. This new infrastructure has been the basis of a thriving community and expansion soon followed.
A hotel in Fargo was the first major building to be erected in the city. The Headquarters Hotel built in 1872, housed not only customers, but government offices and railway. However, the seat survived the first two years before being destroyed by a fire in the kitchen. But in another example of resilience and courage of early settlers, it was completely rebuilt in 90 days.
The city continued to grow steadily until the Second World War. After the war ended Fargo has entered a period of expansion and expanded rapidly. Even a hurricane in 1957 that destroyed much of the north of Fargo, could not stop the city growing. In another example of the resilience of the city, areas hit were quickly rebuilt and all the signs of the devastation promptly removed.
Now Fargo is ranked by Money magazine as one of the most liveable cities in America because of its low crime rates and unemployment rates, decent food and affordable housing. Consequently, aa city attracted major employers in the high tech industry such as Microsoft, Navteq, Alien Technology and the Institute Pracs.
