Do you foresee Europe being completely united?
I recently read a book called ENDWAR, I know it is fictitious and purely made up, But being a Tom Clancy novel, it draws on current political trends, scenarios and extrapolates from there.
Decades ago if you told a person that Europe would use a single universal banknote currency, they would laugh and say the idea was crazy.
So how far-fetch is the idea of a United Europe, your candid opinion please.
Not far fetched at all.
We’re already united under the banner of the European Union. It will probably only be a matter of time before we’re united under a federal government (75-100 years).
Everything began with the Treaty of Rome, in 1957, which set the objective for Europe of creating a “common market” to increase economic prosperity and contribute towards “an ever closer union among the peoples of Europe”.
The common European currency was raised as a issue immediately after WWII. But the idea has existed in Europe for hundreds of years! Great empires require working currencies. From the Romans to Napoleon.
In 1861 Jose Luis Cardoso wrote A Proposal for a “European Currency”. And that’s just a recent proposal.
The Euro was introduced in 1999, a decade ago now. And it was preceded by the ECU (European Currency Unit). The ECU was conceived on 13 March 1979 as an internal accounting unit. It was sparingly used, but it was known to the public. Businesses could pay their taxes in it.
In other words, it was just a matter of time before the Euro emerged. I doubt people would have laughed that hard.
As for the idea of a united Europe, it’s certainly opposed at the moment. That won’t stop it from happening, and I’m living in a country strongly opposed to the EU (Norway).
