What the h is Canada achieving by spending billions of dollars fighting a war over in Afghanistan?
If it’s about oil, we got lots. If its about humanity, there’s plenty of more needy places on the planet. What is the purpose & goal? What do you think is the purpose?
Having worked in Afghanistan as a contractor from 2004/05 I can tell you that the main reason is our NATO obligations. Generally the reasons are political but that said. I would be terrified of what will happen to those poor people when NATO pulls out. The Taliban was an absolutely horrible regime that oppressed people grossly. Read the Kite Runner or A Thousand Splended Suns, very accurate. You are right that there are other nations that need humanitarian assistance, Darfur for one, but unfortunitely the US does not feel this is a priority and they sort dictate these things.
Just so you know, the Canadian Military does do A LOT of good there with the local community. I got see a lot of this first hand.
The war isn’t really about oil, although the US would like to build a pipeline through there. I hate to say it but I think it has more to do with controlling the opium. When the war started 70% of the worlds opium came from Afghanistan, now 90% of the worlds opium comes from Afghanistan, you do the math.
Does that mean we should pull out? I don’t know, it really does break my hearrt to think of what will happen to the average people there if we do. There is a good chance the Taliban could come back, I don’t think Karzai can hold it on his own. As for democracy, it is a bit of a joke there, most people have no idea who they are voting for and just vote for the warlord that treatened them last.
Think about this too, if we pull out of Afghanistan we may find more pressure to go into Iraq and that we don’t want, that is a war about oil. Or worse we could get pulled into something with Iran.
You know we actually had very few casualties before we were moved down to Kandahar to take part in a more American style action. People in Kabul liked us and we did a lot of good there.
